A seminar on the realities, the history, the divinity, and the preparation for persecution

Did Cabo Delgado in Mozambique provide a wake-up call for the Church or was it just another unfortunate event of persecution for believers who found themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time?  More than ever before the words of Christ ring true:  (Mark 13:36-37)  “If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.  What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!'”

How we understand, prepare for, and envision persecution will ultimately determine our response when it happens.  For some it might be systematic restrictions or cultural opposition, for others, like those who live in Cabo Delgado, it might mean waking up one morning and finding your faith under fire when extremists enter your village.  We who have freedom now need to embrace the lessons of discipleship from those who have remained faithful during decades of persecution.

More than 340 million Christians (one in seven) face high levels of persecution in the world today  – an increase of 23% from 260 million during the previous year.  Since the fall of the final strongholds in the Middle East, ISIS has seen a resurgence through their distributed network across Africa with cells in Nigeria, Mozambique, Mali, and the DRC all growing in strength and ability.  This resulted in a 60% increase over the previous year in the number of Christians killed for their faith. More than 9 out of 10 of the global total of 4,761 known deaths were in Africa.  Persecution of Christians around the world has also increased during the Covid pandemic.

Persecution is no longer just a theology. We are now entering a season where the face of persecution, the regions under attack, and the methods of opposition have evolved.  We have to ask ourselves the question of whether we are preparing our churches, our congregants, our groups, and our leaders accordingly?

What do I need to know about what’s going on in the world, and how does that impact global missions?

We are living in a time of major change, disruption, and opportunity – not least in global missions.

The current models of doing missions are being challenged in profound ways. The church is being gifted with an opportunity to re-examine some of our most basic assumptions about how we participate in the mission of God.

The pandemic has stimulated enormous local activity by Christians as well as putting a brake on some aspects of missions, particularly those related to missions as sending.

At the same time, we have sought to demonstrate the opportunity that this disruption provides to reimagine missional activity and realign the way we participate in missions.

As a group of consultants at dia-LOGOS, with more than 60 years of joint missions experience, we would like to assist your group or congregation to rethink and revitalize your missions strategy in a post-COVID-19 world.

Invite us to come and speak at your group/ church/ fellowship.
